The little boy who wanted to fly

31 years ago, a young man fresh out of high school, he took some time off and travelled to Australia. While there, he came across a book written by someone from his land. The book changed his life and he grew up to be one of the most courageous, versatile, experimental, actor the world had ever known. The book is called The Greatest Salesman in the World. And the actor is Mathew Macconaughey.

BLACK AND WHITE VERSION US actor Matthew

But this post is not about the 47 year old actor. No.

Nassim Taleb often repeats, as do a lot of other observers of life – only a few Black Swan events … only few moments in life are life altering, it is only these few moments which you absolutely cannot predict, which decide the patterns of your following daily lives. Think about the time you took a trip, fell in love, met someone really bizarre, found your purpose … or if you are a trader ( and for some odd reason you are reading my blog )  it is only around some events when you make a lot of money or you lose a money.

But this post is not about economics or patterns or probabilities. No.

This post is about a little boy. A little boy who grew up in 9 different lands. Every year or the next, his family would move from one place to another. They were a small family – him, his Mami and his Papi. Papi worked really hard and spend a lot time away from home. Mami was always around him – taking care of him and answering his questions, his never ending curiosities.

Our little boy, the hero, had a favourite question. Every time he met someone new, he would ask them – are you my magical spur? Are you going to make me fly?

And every time he asked that question he was met with a blank stare. His heart broke a little when the new people did not answer his question, when they could not understand his question. He would wear a sad smile on his face and go back to his toys and his books and wonder – when will I find my magical spur? When will I fly? Because if there was one thing our little boy, the hero, wanted, it was to find his magical spur and fly. He wanted to fly so high, higher than anyone had ever flown before.

Seasons came and changed with time, he grew up across cities nine. He ran along rivers and he climbed many mountains. He read varied books and painted many sunsets. He learned to cook like his Mami and he learned to be as sincere as his Papi. Papi and Mami took him out a lot, they made him meet a lot of new people. Every time he met someone new, he would ask them – are you my magical spur? Are you going to make me fly?

No, they said, we cannot make you fly, but if you go away to a distant land, maybe you will be able to fly, maybe you will find your magical spur.

So he heeded the words of strangers and the little boy, our hero, he decided he would go away to a distant land. His Papi told him he could fly right where they were and his Mami cried – don’t go away little boy, you will not find your wings there. The little boy did not care, he wanted to fly.

So he went to a distant land, far away from all he knew. He saw many wonders and he met even more people. He did not ask them his favourite question though, that always drove people away. So he kept his mouth shut and spend his half his days looking after the sheep of the people in the village and spend half his nights staring at the countless bright stars in the sky.

He would take the sheep beyond the big mountain into the vast green lands. While the sheep grazed he would spread his imaginary wings and run and run and pretend to fly. He would sing and he would fly. The sheep loved it when he sang and they loved to see him fly and there was something in his eyes that made him seem trustworthy. So they told him their only secret, the secret the whole of mankind had been searching for but they made him promise not to share this with anyone else.

Mankind came to know that the little boy, our hero, knew the sheep secret of calmness. They asked him to share it with the rest of his kind. He refused. They showered him with gifts, they gave him good food. He still refused. He had made a promise and he could not go back on his word. The sheep had trusted him and he could not break their trust. But if they could find him his magical spur, perhaps he would consider. He did not ask mankind though, it did not seem to want him to fly.

On his way back from the grasslands one fine sunny day, he heard a soft yelp for help. He followed the sound and found a dog caught in a snare. He freed the little dog and from that day the little dog followed the little boy everywhere. The little boy, our hero, fed him, played with him, he even slept with him. Was this his magical spur, was the little dog going to make him fly?

Word about the little boy’s kind heart, his beautiful voice, his sincerity and his ability to keep a secret spread far and wide. Soon many men came to him, to work with him, to listen to his songs and they told him all their secrets. He met so many people, he heard too many secrets and though he helped so many he could still not find his magical spur. He also began to miss his Mami and his Papi.

One day a big man in a yellow kaftan and a blue turban visited the little boy.

What makes you so kind, he asked.

My mami has a kind heart, he replied.

How can you keep a secret, he asked.

My papi has taught me to honor my word, the little boy replied.

Do you know where I come from, he asked.

No, I don’t, where from do you come o’ stranger with a lot of questions, the little boy enquired.

I come from the opposite side of the world, the word about you has flown so far, many more will come after me.

The little boy stared at this stranger. The little boy realised then that he already flown too far. His magical spur had always been by his side, they were the ones who made him fly – his Mami and his Papi. He laughed and he laughed and then he ran back home.

Are you my magical spur, he asked his Mami.

Yes, yes I am, his Mami replied and hugged him.

So the little boy, our hero, took the long way home and a longer time to realise that the people who had inspired him to become who he was had always been around him. Next time before looking for inspiration he looked within rather than outside. They had given him all that he would ever need to fly. It was all within him – hope, desire and his wings.

  1. What beautiful writing Pecs! I loved this strange story about the little boy. It is a sad fact that many of us look for inspiration outside when most of the times it lies within us. Great writing!

  3. I read your book, 27 Broken Footprints and it is an excellent piece of art. I loved it! And I didn’t know you gave away stuff on your blog!!!! 😀 😀 So this is the answer to the question in the end – I think Messi’s association with the brand above is great because I have never seen Messi promote a lot of brands not atleast in India. He is an internationally respected and adored figure and it is a smart move for the brand to get him on board.

  4. The association of Messi with the brand Tata Motors comes as pleasant news. One reflects the value of the other. I own a Manza which is my third car and I have to admit the car has given me little trouble. Can you guess who my favourite football club is???

  5. The writing style has a “Midas Touch”,The Kite Runner had a similar effect on me, how often you visualise while reading & create your own “Moment of Truth”,Thanks for that.
Craziest Answer:-Tata Motors is trying to do what Micromax did something similar with Hugh Jackman,An Indian company trying to portray a global image. But the irony here is Land Rover is such a great success though in India, they are still no.4-5 in automotive industry. Therefore, this is the last bet before they go for the TATA’s popular philosophy of “Ship it or Ship out”-let’s hope the CMO from Maruti who has joined TATA Motors ll save him & sail him through a positive growth.

Now after all those gyan, the crazy part:-
“They wanted a part time coach for TATA Football Academy who also can endorse their motor engines powered by Trust “

  6. The story of a Legend in himself – that’s how I will describe it in a short sentence. Very well written with words which enhance the simplicity yet greatness of the person. Salutations and very happy for you to have got inspired and bringing out your best in life.

My answer: Tata is a name which any and every person can rely on for its honesty, commitment and perseverance. Lionel Messi is a legend who has carved his name in history books with total dedication to the game, simple living and improvisation which is seen with each game he plays. The association of Tata Motors and Lionel Messi as their Brand Ambassador will definitely give an edge to the Tata group over its competitors solely because the brand Ambassador also holds the same reputation of not letting his fans down ever, like Tata Motors who have given the best to the world over the decades. Its an exemplary association par excellence.

You can choose my answer as the Voucher winning comment if you feel I described it all well.. 🙂 Please remember to post it on the Indiblogger contest page today.

  7. Hi pecsbowen,
Indeed a nicely written post. I wish you good luck for the contest
    Here is my answer
The association of Tata Motors with Lionel Messi is that of two greats. Lionel Messi has been exceptionally talented who with his hard work, determination and sacrifices has got better and tougher in his chosen sport so is the Image, reputation and quality of TATA Motors that have transformed brilliant ideas into masterpieces of engineering and created a brand and products that we are so proud of as Indians. Lionel Messi has transformed his body and the mind body co-ordination into a masterpiece of precision and excellence it would not be wrong to say that Lionel Messi is the TATA Motors of sports where as TATA Motors is the Lionel Messi of vehicles both giants in their own spheres driven by the drive to excel and lead by example. So Lionel Messi is the best choice for becoming the brand Ambassador for TATA Motors

  8. Hi pecs,

This article held me captive till the very end. The flow of your words was just right to avoid any interruptions. I believe that all answers lie within oneself. Meditation is needed to connect with our inner self which is also our higher self. When this happens, there is never any need to look beyond one’s higher self for guidance. Kudos to a great post.

Coming to the Answer of your thought provoking question, here’s my take on it.

Lionel Messi is the right choice, as despite being diagnosed with a Growth Hormone Deficiency as a child, he did not let this come in his way and persevered his way to the top. Greatness is when, your life becomes an example for others to follow. Tata motors has it’s own place in India and is a leader by itself in the automobile industry. So, when two biggies come together, a new era is born. India welcomes Lionel Messi, as the Global Brand Ambassador of Tata Motors.

May the most meaningful comment win.Good luck to all.

  9. I felt like I was reading a mystical ancient text, sublime beauty! All the best 🙂

    Inspiration,
    Dedication,
    Discipline,
    Commitment,
    Trust,
    Loyalty,
    Excellence,
    Legacy,
    Immortality.

These are not mere words but a part of our soul. Not just the ones that we carry around in our individual bodies but that supreme soul that binds us all together in this universe. That is why we teach our children values and morals so that these little pockets of our souls do not die away. But when we look around at our modern day lifestyle and society,it leaves a lot to be desired, right? Wrong 🙂 I would say,as long as we have even 1 shred of humanity left, there is a ray of sunshine and that is what we see here.

I am inspired by your story just as I am inspired by the stories of Tata Motors and Lionel Messi. As I said above about humanity and ray of sunshine, it is very few icons left in this world who make me feel that way. Both Tata and Messi definitely make it to this short list.

When we talk about Tata Motors,we talk about the pride that every Indian feels because this is our truly global brand, a brand with a soul, with every product made to help us fly. This is a corporate behemoth that has not amassed its fortunes at the cost of the little man but by being a part of the very grassroots. The legacy of excellence and giving back to the society selflessly is so ingrained in Tata DNA that it has become part of folklore. Even today,in any Indian home, the moment a son/daughter gains employment in a Tata company, nobody talks about salary or CTC, they just thank their lucky stars that they are a part of Tata family. The very soul of India resides in Tata. Tata Motors has taken these very same values global, making Indians proud of what they represent. ‘Look,we represent excellence, with a dollop of old world values, with love and respect’ !

When we look at Messi, we see a boy with dreams in his eyes and a man who has put everything he had in making them come true, and he did! With singleminded focus, dedication and hardwork, he has managed to outdo every obstacle he faced since his birth personally, healthwise and family financial situation wise. Every obstacle became just another step for him to grow and reach up the sky. And still, every time he walks out on the field, he plays with the same agility, alarcity and a a hunger to prove himself as if it is his first game! He hasn’t achieved his demi-God status without superhuman efforts.

When these two demi-Gods of their respective fields come together, there are bound to be fireworks and that is exactly what it is! Purely from a corporate point of view, there are rare instances when we see such a perfect fit form. It can be called a divine sign that a symbol of vibrancy and dynamism like no other has taken shape with the partnership of Tata Motors and Lionel Messi. More than a mere advertising gambit,it is an amalgamation of those perhaps ‘lost’ values that the world needs more of,now more than ever. Maybe the Gods are finally happy!
